Arsenal are looking for a new midfielder, with Granit Xhaka seemingly on the verge of completing a move to Roma – and Teun Koopmeiners has slipped through the net.
Dani Ceballos has gone and Mohamed Elneny isn’t a player to be relied upon every week, so Edu needs to find another option.
Wolves star Ruben Neves is the top target right now, but it seems that Edu has been eyeing up anther option elsewhere.
Arsenal’s interest in Koopmeiners
Tuttomercatoweb report that Atalanta are on the verge of signing AZ Alkmaar star Teun Koopmeiners, and is snubbing Arsenal in order to make the move.
It’s stated that Atalanta playing in the Champions League is the big appeal for Koopmeiners, with Arsenal unable to offer European football at all.
Koopmeiners is now ‘one step away’ from joining compatriots Hans Hateboer, Marten de Roon and Sam Lammers at Atalanta, with Arsenal missing out.
How good was Koopmeiners last season?
Outstanding. The 23-year-old serves as AZ’s captain and he led by example, racking up 17 goals and seven assists in all competitions.
He only has one cap for the Netherlands but has been named in their squad for Euro 2020, meaning his profile could receive a major boost this summer.
Wasserman agent Bart Baving even suggested earlier this year that Koopmeiners is similar to Toni Kroos, which is the kind of midfielder Arsenal would surely love to have.
Another miss for Arsenal
Koopmeiners maybe isn’t as big of a name as Neves, but this is still another miss for the Gunners having been beaten in the race for Emiliano Buendia by Aston Villa.
The Dutchman is young, a proven leader, a great passer of the ball and has a real goal threat, meaning he could have formed a fine partnership with Thomas Partey.
Koopmeiners will absolutely come cheaper than Neves; he’s expected to cost less than £17million when he joins Atalanta, and Arsenal are facing double the outlay for Neves.
This isn’t exactly Edu’s fault, as Koopmeiners simply wants Champions League football.
Still, this is another player like Buendia who could have helped Arsenal and solved a problem area – but unless there’s a big turnaround, the Gunners have missed out.
