Stephen Warnock has told Sky Sports News on Tuesday afternoon that Everton fans have told him that they are ‘gutted’ at Carlo Ancelotti leaving for Real Madrid.
Many expected the shocks on Tuesday to come from England’s final 26-man squad for the Euros, but instead, it came from Merseyside with Ancelotti leaving Everton.
After Real Madrid parted ways with Zidane, they decided to bring back their trophy-laden coach from his stint at Goodison Park.
Ex-Liverpool defender, Warnock, shared what the feeling on Merseyside is like with Ancelotti now out of the door.
“Everton fans are gutted,” said Warnock. “I have spoke to a few already. They just feel that they were getting to a stage where they’d found a World Class manager. A manager who had seen everything. And had the ability to draw players in.
“We saw the high-profile signing of James Rodriguez last summer. And also being able to capture Allan. Someone who he had worked with previously.
“I thought the signings that he made last summer were very, very good signings.
“And you think, another summer, with three or four top-quality additions and Ancelotti being able to add to that squad then Everton would have been a lot stronger for it – now it feels like Everton are having to start from scratch.”
This is a body blow for Everton, who had one of the best coaches and biggest names at their disposal.
The recently concluded campaign may have ended in a pretty poor fashion, but the reputation of Ancelotti was there for him to turn it around, lure more big talents to the club and then get the backing of supporters.
But instead, they now have to watch him from afar as he will now be tasked with trying to win La Liga next season after Real’s rivals were victorious this season.
And the Toffees now have the task of bringing in a new coach, with Tottenham also on the lookout for a new name.
