According to Sport1, Schalke 04 won’t be selling Ozan Kabak to Newcastle anytime soon, amid interest from the Magpies and Leicester.
What’s the story?
Well, Newcastle and Leicester are believed to be interested in the 21-year-old, after Liverpool backed away from their option to buy.
Now, Steve Bruce and Mike Ashley could end up paying more for the centre-back, after Schalke 04 made their intentions clear.
The German outfit plan to keep Kabak until Turkey are knocked out of EURO 2020, in the hope that he raises his value with some impressive displays.
It’s a logical stance, but one that is annoying for Newcastle.
Newcastle could end up paying more for Kabak
It’s very possible that Newcastle could now end up paying more for Kabak with the quality of those in Turkey’s EURO 2020 squad.
Kabak will be facing Italy, Wales and Switzerland, all of whom boast some dangerous attacking talent.
Italy have Lorenzo Insigne, Andrea Belotti and Ciro Immobile.
Wales have Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey, while Switzerland have Xherdan Shaqiri.
The fact that Kabak won’t be facing minnows such as North Macedonia (with all due respect) suggests that he’ll have plenty of defensive work to do.
That should put him in the spotlight, so if he deals with the aforementioned attackers well, Schalke 04 will be rubbing their hands.
The stance could backfire, and Kabak could actually have a nightmare at EURO 2020.
However, after watching him shine for Liverpool, we believe it’s more likely that Newcastle will end up having to pay more for the youngster.
