Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand has warned Liverpool that they can’t replace Georginio Wijnaldum with Thiago Alcantara.
The Dutchman is set to leave Liverpool at the end of the month, and one player who could potentially step into his shoes is Thiago.
However, Ferdinand believes that the Spaniard doesn’t have the attributes required to step up and replace Wijnaldum.
What’s been said?
The former Manchester United man was discussing Wijnaldum’s departure.
“A big miss, he’s the only one who is ever-present in that midfield. It will be a big miss,” Ferdinand said.
“If you think having Thiago instead of him, that will change how that whole midfield works. I think they are not the same. Unless Klopp is going to evolve them into playing a different style, which he is capable of doing,” Ferdinand’s co-host said.
“You can’t. They can’t play the same. Thiago has different attributes man,” Ferdinand said.
Ferdinand is absolutely right about Thiago and Wijnaldum.
Now, we’re not saying that Thiago isn’t an incredible player. After all, anyone with eyes could tell you just how talented he is, but being brilliant on the ball isn’t enough sometimes.
Wijnaldum’s energy, positioning and ability to do the dirty work is something that very few players can match, and Thiago certainly isn’t in that mould.
Unless Klopp is trying to change his system, he needs to find a player who can be a like-for-like Wijnaldum replacement.
